About me…

Hi, I’m Jess! I’ve been vegan since January 2020 – so not that long really but at least one good thing happened this year!! If you want to know a little more about me, why and how I became vegan, and all of the positive things that it’s brought to my life, then read on!

You may be surprised to hear I used to HATE cooking. And now, one year later, I’m starting a recipe blog – I love how life is full of these funny little twists and turns. It’s just that since becoming vegan I’ve been so interested in nutrition and wellbeing that I’ve suddenly switched to LOVING cooking! It’s so fun finding new things to try and experimenting with new flavours and ingredients that I’ve found a passion in an area I never thought I would.

I had been interested in becoming vegan for some time but my husband wasn’t in the slightest bit interested. Honestly, I didn’t know much about the subject at this time, and I really thought that the volume of cooking needed to make everyone’s meals would have been too much work. So, I put off any serious efforts at becoming vegan, until… one evening I decided to put on a documentary on Netflix; little did I know it would change my life forever.

How it all Changed…

The baby was in bed, my husband and I were chilling in the front room and for some reason, I just put on ‘Game Changers’. This documentary takes a look at some misconceptions about the health benefits of meat and dairy and how a plant-based diet can be good for the body for all sorts of reasons – my mind was blown. (You can check out my top 6 vegan documentaries here, or link straight to Game Changers here.)

For the first time in ages I hadn’t looked at my phone once while watching the TV, and my husband, shockingly, was the same. After nearly an hour and a half, the documentary was over and he turned to me and said “right, looks like we’re going vegan then”, and that was that.

I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way; buying things I thought would obviously be vegan but aren’t (milk in most bread anyone?? who knew!) but I’ve just seen it all as a learning curve, and one that’s been really enjoyable!

The Benefits…

I feel better in my body, my skin is clearer and I don’t think I get sick as much anymore – I used to pick up every cold going around! I definitely lost some weight without even trying to start off with too. This is because I generally have gone down the whole food plant-based route (not strictly though) so I’ve mainly filled up on veggies. All of these combined have been very welcome side effects. 

For me, there’s a whole combination of reasons I became vegan, including the environment and animal welfare, as well as personal health. It’s all of these benefits as well as how much research and learning I’ve done that gave me the idea to start Bombveg. I want to share all of this; the recipes, the tips, the experiences. I’ve loved it all and I hope I can help anyone who is interested in becoming a vegan, or someone who maybe finds the whole thing a little daunting, to give it a go and see how enjoyable and fulfilling the journey can be.
