What Kit do I Need to Make This Air Fryer Chickpea Recipe?

An air fryer is about the only thing you need for this recipe! There are loads out there now but I’m a strong believer that you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a really decent model.

The way they work is just by blowing really hot air around your food – simple! So, as long as it does that, the only other important thing to think about when buying an air fryer is size. Think about how many people it needs to be making food for, and what kind of food you will be cooking.

This article from Peta goes through a load more ideas of what you can cook in an air fryer. Just in case you needed even more ideas. There’s also plenty of Bombveg recipes to choose from too so don’t forget to check them out…

Other than an air fryer, make sure you have some measuring spoons and an airtight container for storing the chickpeas in. They last several days when stored correctly which makes them a perfect grab-on-the-go snack. You don’t need anything fancy, but opt for an airtight container over open to keep them crispy for longer.

What’s in this Air Fryer Chickpea Recipe?

To keep this recipe quick and easy, I’ve used tinned chickpeas and dried spices. You might notice there’s zero oil in this air fryer chickpea recipe – that’s to keep the calories down. The best thing about air fryer cooking is that you can get lovely crispy, golden food without any oil at all!

  • Chickpeas – Get the ones that come in unsalted liquid. You add salt into the recipe so you need to control how much you put in to stop it from being overly salty.
  • Smoked Paprika – One of my favorite spices! Using regular, unsmoked paprika will work just fine for this recipe if that’s all you have.
  • Cumin – I really get through cumin. It’s high in vitamins and minerals
  • Dried Parsley – My current obsession. If you have some fresh parsley in the garden you can use it instead of the dried stuff. Wait until you’ve cooked the chickpeas, finely chop, and sprinkle it on once the chickpeas have cooled.
  • Garlic Powder – Remember that a little goes a long way.
  • Chili Powder – I use the mild stuff because my two-year-old loves it this way. If you’re looking for more of a kick then level up to the regular or hot varieties.
  • Sea Salt – So important in this recipe! I forgot it once and you could really tell. It brings out all of the other flavors beautifully. You can also add in a bit more after cooking the chickpeas to match your own tastes if you want more.

How to Make the Recipe

Although this recipe is really simple, there are a few sneaky pro tips for getting the best possible air fryer chickpeas you can.

  • Mix the chickpeas and spices in a bowl, not the air fryer – This is because you don’t want all of the spices falling off the chickpeas and through the bottom of the air fryer. If you mix in a bowl they will stick to the chickpeas and end up with more flavor.
  • Only shake them once when cooking, halfway through – For the same reason above. The less shaking you do the less spice you will lose = yummier chickpeas.
  • Let them cool – They are good when warm, but if you’re after the crunchy, crispy texture then letting them cool is the way to go. They will crisp up nicely if you leave them for around 20-30 minutes.

These crispy chickpeas are great because they last for a good 5 days in the fridge in an airtight container. Just be aware that they do lose a little of that crunchy texture as time goes on.

This air fryer chickpea recipe is great for batch cooking because they last so long in the fridge and go with so many things. I do a couple of tins of chickpeas at a time and double the recipe below.
